Tool
Birthday Across Timezones
When is someone's birthday in each city, and which city gets to celebrate first?
What makes this different
The "birthday window" (the gap between the first city celebrating and the last) is the useful output. If your friend is in Auckland and you are in Los Angeles, the window is almost 24 hours; the first message lands about a day before the last one. Most tools don't surface that.
How to use it
- Pick the person's birthday (date).
- Pick the cities.
- Read the order in which they roll into the birthday, and the total window length.
For friends and family spread across the planet, a birthday is not a single instant. The first city to roll over to the birthday gets to send the first message; the last city, the last. This tool calculates that ordering, plus the exact UTC instant the birthday begins in each city.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the order change year to year?
Because the birthday is on the same month/day, but the year-on-year DST status of each city may have shifted. Cities that observe DST may swap positions in the order by an hour across the year.
Can I see next year's birthday too?
Yes 鈥?the tool computes the next birthday automatically. Change the date picker to a past date and it will use the upcoming occurrence.
What if the birthday is February 29?
The tool will use March 1 for non-leap years in cities that strictly enforce the calendar. Most jurisdictions treat Feb 29 birthdays as Feb 28 or March 1 by convention; the tool uses March 1.
